Virgin Egg – Eggs Boiled in Urine!

Just when you thought you have heard it all, China serves you with a new delicacy. This time served fresh as hard boiled eggs from children's urine. In the province of Zhejiang in China, urine boiled eggs is a delicacy and locals can't get enough of them. As spring sets in, a strange but familiar smell permeates the air in Dongyang City of China’s Zhejiang Province, as locals begin to eat the seasonal "virgin egg." It’s the smell of urine, because "virgin eggs" are actually eggs boiled in the urine of virgin boys. The local word is Tongzi Dan which translates to “boy egg”. This bizarre street eat, though appalling to an outsider, has been a standard street fare in Dongyang for hundreds of years. The eggs are soaked and boiled in prepubescent boy’s urine. Vendors collect the urine from local schools everyday according to chef Lu Ming, the younger the boys, the better their urine. "The urine is gathered from local schools and the very best comes from boys under 10 years old". Then the eggs – which have official cultural significance status – are boiled in the urine, first with their shells on and then with them off for a day and a night. The process takes about a day to complete before they can be served ‘fresh’ and sell for 1.50 Yuan or about 23 cents. Residents of Dongyang love it. "It's so delicious that I can eat 10 eggs a day," said a woman who moved to Dongyang several years ago However, not all Dongyang people are interested in them. One local resident, said he had never tasted "virgin eggs." "I can't stand the smell. It's awful."
