Video: Chief Justice Corona Walks Out of Impeachment Court

Chief Justice Renato Corona walked out of the Senate impeachment trial after delivering his speech almost three hours on Tuesday, May 21, 2012. In his three-hour testimony, Corona denied allegations that he had 82 dollar accounts, 31 peso accounts and 45 properties. "I am the Chief Justice, I would like to be excused," Corona said, ending his testimony before abruptly leaving the session hall, even if his request to be excused from the proceedings has not yet been granted. Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile has since ordered the defense to bring Corona back to the witness stand. Corona's vehicle will also be disallowed to leave the Senate compound since the gates have been ordered closed. Corona’s action came after he agreed to unlock the secrecy of his bank deposits, which his accusers say was not fully declared in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN). The magistrate maintained that he should not and cannot be penalized for abiding by the provisions of the Foreign Currency Deposits Act. He said the inaccuracies in the SALN are not an impeachable offense. "With God as my witness, I affix my signature,” Corona said, adding that perceived impeachment supporter Senator Franklin Drilon and the 188 congressmen who signed the complaint should also sign the waiver. He said if they do not sign the waiver, he will direct his defense team to finally close his case. The prosecution panel, for its part, said Corona's walk-out shows his clear disrespect for the impeachment tribunal. "He knows the rules. In an en banc session, a witness cannot leave without the permission of the court. So why is he doing this now?" House Deputy Speaker Erin Tanada, a spokesperson for the prosecution team, told reporters. "The way he acted, he showed complete insult to the institution," Tanada added. Meanwhile, Tanada and fellow spokesperson Sonny Angara refused to accept the challenge of Chief Justice Corona to waive secrecy on their own bank accounts calling this challenge a "stunt." "Naghahanap siya ng kadamay. Alam naman niya na napakahirap kunin ng 188 signatures and alam niya handa na magdesisyon dito," Angara said. Source
